Thursday at 12:30-1:30pm in room 7C21
Hopefully we can use this online space to expand our discussions

About Us:

The CRDGroup is interested in all things theoretically, philosophically and practically minded, in an exploration of the notions related to creative practices. This discussion group was originally formed for the researchers interest in design and design related research. The scope of the forum has grown to include not only a discussion on design but on all creative practices. Each Thursday the members of the CRDGroup get together over lunch to discuss topics related to Creative Research. Our members come from a wide variety of disciplines and take it in turns to lead a discussion on topics relevant to creative practices in their own fields.

The discussions are about:

Sharing information
Getting feedback
Throwing around ideas
Not feeling so alone
Having a bit of research related chit chat over lunch

Hi everyone

My name is Kate Armstrong and I will be presenting the Topic Development and Refinement workshop next Tuesday 5 February from 1.30 to 4.00 pm at the University of Canberra. We are in room 5A37 (building 5, level A, room 37) and the campus map is at http://www.canberra.edu.au/university/maps.

In this workshop we focus on developing and refining research topics and by the end of the session you should have:
- a better understanding of how topics evolve and the implications for the research journey;
- experience in narrowing down a topic (we will do this as a group);
- 10 great reasons why a well-defined topic is a joy (which I hope will motivate you to further develop your topic); and
- a checklist to work through to refine and clarify your topic.

To assist with one of the workshop exercises please bring along a 50-100 word statement of your topic. Don’t be concerned if it is still embryonic!

I will not be using PowerPoint for this presentation (phew I hear some of you say) so I don't have anything to post here. You will receive a handout at the workshop.

This workshop will be presented by Graham Durant Law.

This workshop will be divided in three sessions

Introduction to Network Analysis:

brief history of Network Analysis.
Network Analysis in the Research Traditions.
why is Network Analysis useful, and why is it gaining traction now.

examples across disciplines, using Network Analysis.

2. An Introduction to Social, Organisational and Business Network Analysis.

differences between Social, Organisational and Business Network Analysis.
some of the visualisation and analysis tools that are available, their strengths and weaknesses.
examples of the various maps (visualisations) that can be produced.
Introduction of the concepts of one-mode and two mode networks, and attributes.

3. A Short Social Network Analysis Exercise. In this session participants will be able to

discuss how data might be collected and structured.
list their friendship network, with attributes, in an EXCEL spreadsheet.
bring their data into UCINET and NetDraw.
discuss ethical considerations, and presentation tips.
